Here's What is Happening in 5th Grade...

Dear Parents,                                                               May 20, 2010

The students had a great week! They are enjoying this beautiful weather, and I even had some classes outside.

In Reading, we started our next story, “Golden Lion Tamarin”.  The students have been recalling a lot of facts about this monkey. We have been working on writing with main idea and supporting details. In Grammar, we identified prepositional phrases in sentences. We also studied the most common prepositions. Our Spelling posttest will be tomorrow.

In Math, we have been focusing on ratio. The students have learned the three ways to write it. They also learned how to figure out word problems by setting up equivalent ratios. Today, we took the chapter test. Please sign and return it.

In Science 5, we finished our unit on rocks and minerals. I think that I have helped identify about one million rocks in the last two weeks. On Tuesday, they had their unit test, and their rock collection was due. They did a very nice job and seemed to have a fun time collecting/studying rocks! Today, we started our last unit in Science 5, which is on weather. We will log the weather conditions every day, in the first part of class.

In Art, the students were given white tag board paper and a bottle of glue to make a creation, only using what was on the playground. They spent thirty-five minutes working at this and came up with beautiful/creative designs and pictures. I was impressed!!

In Spanish, the students reviewed the instrument names and the alphabet. They also sang some Spanish songs.

In Religion, we read about ways to love. We also learned how the family is the domestic church. The students had to write three ways that their family shows love and respect towards each other.

Just a reminder, next Thursday will be our trip to the Science Museum. The students will have a great time!!

       Sincerely,

           Mrs. Haggerty
