Here's What is Happening in 6th Grade...

Updated 5/27/10

RELIGION

This week we have been discussing why Catholics pray for the dead. Your child should be able to tell you about this. We also studied St. Lucy, the patron saint of blindness, eye disease or throat infections. Ask your child about some-thing he/she remembers about Lucy’s story.  We will be completing the chapter review and using it as an open book test on Friday.

SOCIAL STUDIES

We have been reviewing the state government and looking at the history of the State Capitol in preparation for our trip tomorrow.  With the Smart Board, I have been able to pull images from the internet and really show the students some of the things they will see and other things to look for.  I expect that their behavior will be as great as it was when we went to Duluth last week.

LANGUAGE

The students have been writing about the many skills (both academic and personal) that they have acquired during their years hear at SS. Peter and Paul.  We are currently proofing and editing them, and then they will appear on the bulletin board in the entry way that Bernie Doll and Christi Becker have prepared for us.  Be sure to watch for it and take some time to read about our growth.

OTHER

I returned your child’s WWII research paper to him/her on Wed. morning.  Please ask about it if you have not seen it.  **I have been having lots of difficulty with late or missing work in the last 2 weeks.  If your child is missing anything, there is a sheet attached to the top of this page. All work must be completed and handed in by Friday.

MATH

Today we tested perimeter, area, and circumferences.  The students were allowed to use calculators on the test, so choosing the correct formula and following it was the only thing they needed to focus on. I did have a list of formulas for them to use, but they had to determine which one was the correct one.  Watch for the tests to come home Friday with your child.  This is the last test that we will have this year, but we will do some work with volume at the end of this week and early next.

READING

We are deep into Where the Red Fern Grows. It has been a very eventful week as far as the story line goes.  If your child has not been telling you about the book, please be sure to ask about it. I believe the entire class is hooked into it.  We will complete this next week, but it will take some reading at home.  Please be sure to encourage or require your child to keep up.  It is my goal to see the movie next week after we complete the book so that we can make some comparisons between the two.
